Each national lottery will have its own rules, but there are general rules that are applicable to all lotteries. Lottery rules have to be adhered to no matter where you play. If you are in doubt about the lottery rules, just check the website of the particular lottery and you will find them somewhere on the front page. Basically all lottery rules are the same.

The basic rules of playing the lottery or lotto are very simple. Mark 6 numbers out of
49 on a game card, lotto ticket or whatever you are given. You need not use a ticket to write down numbers if you wish, but can allow the computer terminal to choose 6 numbers at random for you. You can choose to use the same numbers for a number of draws. You will only be given one ticket but it will be marked with the days of the additional draws you have paid for.

Your completed lotto slip must be taken back to the terminal so that your numbers can be registered.  You will be given a lotto game ticket – it is your responsibility to make sure that the information on it is correct.  Make sure that the bar coded serial number is clearly printed on the ticket otherwise this could cause a problem if you should win a prize. It is a good idea to write your name and address on the back of the ticket to prevent anyone else trying to claim your prize in the event of you becoming a winner.

The lottery or lotto rules state that if the six numbers of your choice match the six numbers of the lottery game selection you will be a jackpot winner!  Remember if there is more than one winner, you will have to share the money between you.  You don’t just have to have six numbers matching; five, four and three will also allow you to win a smaller prize.  If you have five numbers matching and the bonus number you will get the second highest prize.

General lottery rules are the same in most countries.  Any winning ticket that is mutilated or tampered with in any way will not be counted in the draw. You cannot get a prize if you have lost your ticket, even if you did write the numbers down.  No ticket will mean no prize.  Persons under a certain age may not participate in lotteries.  You will find that the ages vary between 16 and 21, you will have to find the correct information on the relevant website.

Winning tickets are always validated before prize money is paid and it must be claimed not later than 6 months to 1 year from the date of drawing.  If your ticket is lost or stolen it will be your own responsibility and not that of the lottery company.

Lotto and lottery tickets should be kept in a safe place until after the draw and you have had time to make sure whether you are a winner or not.
