LOTTERY SCAMS

Lotteries always stir up a bit of excitement inside most of us. The idea of winning a large prize is always exciting. Because of this there are many lottery scams around that exploit gullible people.

You might have received an email from a bogus lottery that on first sight looked legitimate.  They use a bogus name and even quote the so-called winning ticket numbers and congratulate you on winning x amount of money.  They will always tell you that you won a lottery from overseas that you are not familiar with. The whole idea is to get you into dialog with them so that they can convince you to pay over a certain amount of money in order to get “the big prize”.

It often does not occur to receivers of these emails that they did not even buy a ticket for this so-called lottery.  In the excitement of receiving the congratulatory email they are overwhelmed by their “good luck” and fall into the trap of the scam lottery.  The email will look authentic because in many cases they will use the name of a well-known legitimate lottery.

The email will always suggest that you hurry with your reply in case you lose out.  You are advised to immediately send a fee or bank account details in order to release your prize as soon as possible.  Many people do this in the excitement of the moment, and only afterwards when they do not hear from these scammers again, do they realize what was actually going on.

You will not be made to pay a fee for winning money in a legitimate lottery – so remember if you are asked to pay a fee in order to receive a prize that it is a bogus lottery.  Bear in mind that you will not win an overseas lottery if you did not buy a ticket from an authorized distributor in the specific country mentioned.

If you receive an email or letter in the mail congratulating you on your winnings, you can be sure that it is a scam.  Large lotteries and state lotteries do not email the winners.  The best way to treat this type of email, if it looks at all suspicious to you, is to delete it without opening it.

There are so many unscrupulous people in the world that one has to protect your self against scams.  Never reply to these emails, or call a phone number if one is shown on the email.  Any contact with these scammers gives them a chance of getting into dialog with you, which is exactly what they wanted in the first place.

In some cases receivers of these emails have received a “prize”, which will be something inferior and not what was promised.  It will never be the amount of money that was mentioned in the email.  In on particular case a guy received an old pair of shoes in the mail, after sending an amount of money to be able to receive a substantial lottery winning.  Be wary of lottery scams and don’t just assume that Lady Luck was on your side.
